[PSYCH IN 60] What’s the Difference Between Autism and Asperger’s?

What’s the Difference Between Autism and Asperger’s?

Autism and Asperger’s: Are they the same? Are they different? What does that mean? It’s somewhat of a hard question to answer, but here’s my shot.

A lot of people use these terms interchangeably and a lot has happened with the removal of the term “Aspergers” from the DSM-IV. I still use the terms “Asperger’s” and “Autism”, but I prefer to use the word “The Spectrum”.

The way I translate the spectrum is by using something called “The Lemon Continuum”.

It means you have a glass of water, a glass of water with a lemon on the side, lemon-flavored water, lemonade, a lemon, and a lemon farm. This is less-more, not good or bad and you can place people along this lemon continuum.

So what I refer to the spectrum, Autism, and Asperger’s is typically: “how much lemon in the water do you have?”
